Two minute silence: Armistice Day marked across Europe and the world

The world marks the 95th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice on November 11th 1918, which brought hostilities during the First World War to a close.

Commemorations are taking place across the world, with many countries – particularly in the Commonwealth – having already marked the loss of life during the First World War and wars since 1914 with Remembrance Sunday events yesterday.

Ceremonies and commemorative events have already taken place at local and national levels, including in Australia and New Zealand.

For many countries across Europe including Belgium, France and Poland, Armistice Day is a national holiday.

A more celebratory tone will complement reflection in countries such as Poland, which marks November 11th as its Independence Day.

Centenary News will be reporting on events as they develop over the course of the day.
