UK mint to produce special First World War Centenary coin series

The Royal Mint has announced that it will produce a five year coin series to mark the Centenary of the First World War.

The first of the coins (pictured above) has been minted to commemorate the outbreak of the conflict.

The £2 coin is based on Lord Kitchener’s famous recruitment poster – ‘Your country needs you’.

The Royal Mint describes the design as one which “recalls the spirit, and with hindsight, the poignancy, of the rush to enlist encouraged by Lord Kitchener”.

The coin is presented in a folder exploring Britain at the outbreak of war, Kitchener’s campaign and the men who volunteered to fight with Britain from across the Commonwealth.
