Belarus town plans Centenary memorial

The Belarus Telegraph Agency reports that a memorial park and a series of sculptures are planned in the town of Smorgon to mark the First World War Centenary.

Smorgon, close to the modern day border with Lithuania, was the scene of fighting between German and Russian forces on the Eastern Front from September 1915 to February 1918.

The town will also host an international commemorative meeting in July 2014 as part of a national plan of events to mark the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the war.
