‘Poppies for Schools’ project to mark First World War Centenary expands

A local campaign to plant poppies in schools – which has attracted global attention – is set to expand.

Stanley Kaye originally launched a campaign calling for poppies to be planted in time for the Centenary of the First World War in the Peterborough area.

Since then, the campaign has gone viral and he has received positive responses from countries in Asia, Europe and North America.

Ed Schofield, a former Army reservist and the Head of e-Commerce at Unwins Seeds, became aware of the campaign and Unwins Seeds donated 2,000 packets of poppy seeds to schools in the Peterborough area earlier this year.

Due to the success and support for the campaign, Unwins Seeds, which is owned by Westland Horticulture will now offer poppy seeds to schools across East Anglia and Yorkshire, where the business has operational sites.

Ed Schofield said: “Unwins Seeds wholeheartedly support this campaign and we would like to see a veritable sea of red poppies across East Anglia and Yorkshire in time or thecentenary of the outbreak of World War One next year”.

“As a local employer, we feel it is important that our children understand the meaning of the poppy and take pride in it as our national symbol of remembrance – we owe it to those who died so we might have a future – to never forget”.
