In an interview with BBC History Magazine, the historian Niall Ferguson has said that Britain should have “stayed out” of the First World War, describing the decision to enter the conflict as “the biggest error in modern history”.
The author of The Pity of War said that it was in Britain’s interests “to stay out in 1914”, and that “the cost of the First World War to Britain was catastrophic, and it left the British empire at the end of it all in a much weakened state”.
