Serbia’s President, Tomislav Nikoli, has opened an exhibition focussing on Serbian First World War literature at Belgrade City Library.
Speaking at the event, President Nikoli said it was important for gaining a ‘full grasp’ of the history of the period and his country’s suffering during the conflict.
Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia on 28th July 1914 after rejecting its response to an ultimatum over Archduke Franz Ferdinand’s assassination in Sarajevo by a Bosnian Serb, Gavrilo Princip.
‘Serbian Literature and the Great War’ examines the work of the most significant Serbian writers whose lives were marked by the war.
The exhibition includes original copies of rare books published during the war, as well as immediately before and after hostilities.
There’s also an overview of literature as seen through wartime periodicals published in Serbia, Croatia, Greece and France.
Serbian authors who wrote during the conflict are featured in a display of 17 posters.
