The US Library of Congress has selected Centenary News to be archived as part of the Library’s collection of websites marking the Centenary of the First World War.
The Library of Congress is charged with preserving national artefacts and providing long-term access to them.
Traditionally, the Library has focused on acquiring, cataloging and preserving collection materials of historical importance to the Congress and the American people. In recent years, there has been a growing focus on archiving digital materials, including websites.
As such, Centenary News has been identified by the Library as an “important” website marking the Centenary of the First World War and has therefore been archived in its World War One Centennial collection.
Content will be collected from the Centenary News website at regular intervals, which will be made available to researchers at Library facilities.
In the future, the website could be made available on the Library’s public access website, allowing researchers from around the world to explore the site’s content.
William Elsbury, a military history specialist at the Library of Congress, said that Centenary News was an “important addition” to the online collection.
Centenary News was launched in 2011 as a not-for-profit social enterprise website, with the aim of providing “independent, impartial and international” coverage of the 100th anniversary of the First World War.
Since its inception, the website has grown and provides frequent news stories and feature articles, with volunteers from around the globe writing for us.
