President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau led a commemoration ceremony on December 31st 2014 in honour of the Fijians who served in World War I.
The commemoration, held at the National War Memorial site in Veiuto, Suva, included the President reading the Roll of Honour of those 124 soldiers who served in the First Fiji Contingent in the First World War. Family representatives of the 1st and 2nd Fiji Contingent and Fiji Labour Corps also attended the service.
Major Vanavasa Vakacegu, President of the Returned Soldiers and Ex-servicemen Association (RSEA), commended the government’s observance of the Centenary, saying, ‘I’m glad to witness the commemoration of the First Fiji Contingent to World War One. I thank the Government for remembering the fallen soldiers.’
