The major First World War battles of 1916 will be the focus for a conference next year hosted by the French Centenary organisation, Mission Centenaire 14-18, and its Scientific Council.
Papers are being sought for the event in Paris from June 22-24th 2016.
Mission Centenaire says the aim is ‘to advance knowledge by broadening perspectives and introducing international comparison.’
The conference will examine not only Verdun and the Somme, but also look beyond the Western Front to the Brusilov Offensive in Galicia and ‘all the major battles, wherever they occurred and whatever their form and nature.’*
Proposals for papers should be submitted by December 1st 2015. The working languages for the conference will be French, English and German, with simultaneous translation. Papers in Russian will be accepted. Full details of the conference can be found on the Mission Centenaire 14-18 website.
*1916 saw the only full-scale clash between the British and German navies at the Battle of Jutland in the North Sea.
*In the Caucasus campaign, Turkey lost Erzurum and Trabzon to the Russians but defeated British/Indian forces at the siege of Kut-al-Amara in Mesopotamia. The Arab revolt against Turkish rule broke out in 1916.
*Italy launched fresh attacks on the Isonzo River in an attempt to break through against Austria-Hungary. A new front opened in the Balkans when Romania entered the war on the Allied side.
