Applications are invited for an international summer school focussing on the First World War Macedonian Front – to be held in the Republic of Macedonia – in June 2016.
The four-day event, in the southern city of Bitola, will examine the social and cultural history of a ‘forgotten front’ which drew nearly a million troops to the Balkans between 1915-18.
Allied forces captured Bitola (formerly Monastir) during an offensive against the Bulgarian and German armies in autumn 1916.
Bulgaria was forced out of the war with a two-week Allied offensive, commanded by the French General, Louis Franchet d’Espèrey, in what is now northern Macedonia in September 1918.
The summer school, entitled “Remembrance through the cultural heritage of the First World War on the Macedonian Front” will be held from June 25-30.
It’s open to students or enthusiasts, aged 18-30, of history, archaeology, ethnology and related fields. The deadline for applications is May 25. Details can be found here.
The event is organised by the European Association for Local Democracy (ALDA), a body established on the initiative of the Council of Europe’s Congress of Local and Regional Authorities in 1999 to promote good governance.
