English village of Hoby holds First World War commemorative events

The Hoby District and Local History Society in Leicestershire have organised events to honour local men and women who lived through, and contribued to, the First World War.

Forget Me Not Exhibition – 23 May – 25 May 2015

This unique exhibition runs from 23 – 25 May 2015 from 11.00 a.m. – 5.00 p.m. each day and tells the stories of ancestors of today’s village residents including photographs of memorabilia and recordings of letters sent home. When the Hoby and District Local History Society set out to put on this exhibition they had no idea how extensive it would become and they are thrilled to be able to share it. Admission is FREE, with any donations going to The Royal British Legion, Help for Heroes and Combat Stress.”

‘Hoby’s Great War’ – 16 May 2015

“The audience will be transported back to the Hoby of 1914-18 and will meet many of the characters who lived in the village then. Funny, poignant and historically fascinating, the evening begins at 7.30 p.m. and ends at around 9.45 p.m. Tickets for this event are FREE, having been sponsored by the Heritage Lottery Fund.”

Evensong and a muffled quarter peal – 19 May 2015

George Sharpe was the first Hoby soldier to lose his life in the First World War. He was posthumously awarded the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. 6.00 p.m. – 7.00 p.m.

“Half muffled quarter peals will be rung over the next three years to commemorate the centenary of the deaths of all eighteen men associated with Hoby.”
