‘The Enemy at Home: German Internees in World War I Australia’ online exhibition

The Migration Heritage Centre, New South Wales, Australia, has developed an online exhibition based on photographs taken in 1915-1919 of German and Austrian internees in Australia.

The photographs, which were taken by Bavarian Paul Dubotzki, explore the experience of these “enemy aliens” who “created intricate societies with cafes, clubs, newspapers, an array of small businesses, theatres, tennis courts, kitchen gardens, laundries, boat-building and regattas, beach activities and athletic demonstrations”.

The Enemy at Home online exhibition is a partnership between the New South Wales Migration Heritage Centre and the Historic Houses Trust of New South Wales.
