‘Mixed emotions’ on Emperor Franz Joseph Centenary – Radio Prague

A programme broadcast on Radio Prague reports ‘mixed emotions’ among Czechs in the week that marked the 100th anniversary of Emperor Franz Joseph’s death.

After decades of rejecting everything Austrian, ‘the edges have smoothed and the old Austro-Hungarian Empire has even become an object of nostalgia’, the programme says.

The newly-formed Czechoslovak state (now the Czech Republic and Slovakia) declared independence in October 1918 as Austria-Hungary collapsed during the final days of the First World War.
