The New Zealand WW100 Programme Office has announced the production of a video marking the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Hill 60 in Gallipoli.
The battle was on August 21st 1915. Roughly 400 men from the Canterbury and Otago Mounted Rifles regiments were part of the attack.
The video is part of the Nga Tapuwae New Zealand First World War Trails that explore the battles of the Gallipoli Campaign, with soldiers’ personal stories, giving insight into the New Zealand story of Gallipoli.
Trail Five – The Defence, is the last trail featured in the series. The trail brings Hill 60 to life using the story and diary entries of Francis Twisleton (second-in-charge of the Otago Mounted Rifles Regiment).
Francis Twisleton was born in Yorkshire and emigrated to New Zealand, arriving with his brother Thomas in 1895. He then went on to own a farm in Gisborne before serving with the Otago Mounted Rifles Regiment in Gallipoli. He survived the Gallipoli Campaign and went on to fight on the Western Front.
